The exhibition, Da Bao (Takeout) became explorations into Chinese cultural diaspora, or what was later coined "cultural take-out".
The first artist I found, Zhangzhao Hui, is a Chinese ink painter, both contemporary and traditional . We thought it would be great to collaborative work together, and I wanted to use the results of our process for the exhibition publication (it never worked out).In 2012 I was hired to co-curate an exhibition of Chinese artists that I later decided should be Chinese/Canadians, Chinese that studied abroad and Canadians that lived or did residencies in China. The exhibition became an international, diasporic survey. I began my research in Beijing, and in the 798 Art Factory art district. "798" features art galleries, studios, art residencies–national and international – workers for all the stores and many of the artists live in the district, and is a very international art district which brings wealth to locals of the area, through restaurants, street sales and art installation. |
