I reside in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on Indigenous, Metis, Treaty No. 1 Territory, the home of ancestral lands.
Most of my work is influenced by the every day–a continuous search for narratives and processes that link or contradict each other. Cultural theorist artist Noel Arnaud declared, "I am the space where I am". His concept became the scaffold for my art practice. In 2008 I moved to China (returning to Canada in 2021). My fourteen years in China profoundly influenced and inspired what I create; I often ask myself "How can I maintain the spirit of being a constant traveller"?

Born in 1967 in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, Doug is an accomplished artist, independent curator, and art educator. His artistic journey has been significantly shaped by his experiences living in Beijing, China, from 2008 to 2020, where he taught, exhibited, and curated art. Doug’s work often delves into contemporary dialogues across diverse contexts and has reached audiences in the USA, UK, China, South Korea, and Croatia. He engages with geo-political themes and absurdism, fostering critical discourse and reinterpretation within global narratives. Doug collaborates on theatrical and film-based projects, working across various mediums, including traditional, musical, and experimental art forms.
From 1992 to 2006, Doug held multiple positions at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, culminating as assistant curator before pursuing his master’s degree in visual arts in London, UK. His artistic focus revolves around a unique practice he terms “The Third Practice,” which bridges the roles of artist and curator. Currently, Doug serves as a board member of Canadian Contemporary Art Practices and is the Vice President of Video Pool in Winnipeg, where he continues to curate and create impactful art.
